PALEA's strike amid 'Pedring' an 'insensitive' move - Palace

TOKYO (via PLDT) – MalacaƱang on Tuesday criticized the move of the Philippine Airlines ground crew union to launch a strike-protest amid the wrath of typhoon "Pedring," saying the action was "insensitive."

“PALEA (PAL Employees’ Association) members' mass action in walking out of their jobs at a time when there is a typhoon shows insensitivity towards the riding public,” Presidential Communications Operations Office head Secretary Herminio Coloma said.

President Benigno Aquino III has ordered Executive Secretary Paquito Ochoa Jr. to supervise the efforts of the labor department, Manila International Airport Authority, and Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines in resolving the matter at the soonest possible time, Coloma said.

“The government has adhered to the rule of law in addressing the PALEA's issue on labor outsourcing and we call on PALEA to do the same,” he said.

“It is also provided by Civil Aviation law that air travel must be reliable, safe and secure. Government will do its duty to do its job in this regard,” Coloma added.

PAL management has cancelled all flights departing and arriving Manila on Tuesday due to the work stoppage, which the flag carrier described as “illegal.”

PALEA is protesting the planned outsourcing of catering, booking, and luggage services jobs where some 2,600 workers will lose their jobs.
